10 Fun Wheelchair Accessible Things to Do in Gulf Shores

Restricted mobility can present challenges most people don’t realize.  For folks who aren’t able to walk, accessing a beach or vacation attraction may be difficult or impossible.  The City of Gulf Shores recently installed a wheelchair accessible beach mat that will make accessing The Gulf from the public beach parking lot a great deal easier for those in wheelchairs, on scooters, or pushing strollers.

In addition to visiting the pristine beaches of the Alabama Gulf Coast, there are several other fun activities around our Island Paradise we’d like to suggest:

1       Explore the Hugh S Branyon Backcountry Trail

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is a great place for folks with limited mobility to spend a day.  The trail complex, located within Gulf State Park, consists of 25 miles of 15 paved trails.  While you’re on the trail, you’ll pass through up to six distinct ecosystems and explore almost 6200 acres of wildlife.  That’s a lot of exploring!  The paved pathways are easy on wheels, as well as on feet, so anyone can enjoy a day outing on The Trail.  Remember to bring your camera.  You’re going to see our local wildlife and we’re pretty sure you’re going to want to share what you see with your friends back home.

2       Take a Dolphin Cruise aboard the Sunny Lady

The Sunny Lady , a fun family tour boat, offers tours of the back bays of Orange Beach and leaves out of The Wharf.   While this cruise does not go into The Gulf of Mexico, you’re still set to enjoy an outing filled with fun, waves and wildlife viewing.  Dolphin cruises last about an hour and a half.  The Sunny Lady has a ramp available making it easy for folks in wheelchairs to board.  Guests are permitted to bring a small six-pack cooler but if you forget yours…no worries!  Light snacks like sodas and chips are available for purchase during the cruises.  Bring your camera and sunscreen and prepare to see some dolphins!

3       Ride the Ferris Wheel at The Wharf

After your dolphin cruise, stay at The Wharf for a little while longer and ride the Ferris wheel!  The Ferris wheel at The Wharf has a 4.0 rating from TripAdvisor and has become a local landmark.  The Ferris Wheel at The Wharf is wheelchair accessible and we love the view from the top.  With its great location at The Wharf, this incredibly tall ride will provide a view of our island you won’t soon forget.  Give it a try and don’t forget let us know what you think.

4       Fish from Gulf State Park Pier

The Gulf State Park Pier , located on Beach Boulevard in Gulf Shores has always been a favorite stop for locals and guests, alike.  Whether you’re on a date, a fishing outing or just wanting to spend a day listening to the lapping of the waves, Gulf State Park Pier is sure to please.  On extra warm days, visit the indoor seating at the concession area.  You’ll also be able to purchase fishing tackle and souvenirs while you’re on the pier.  Comfort stations are located at the midpoint of the pier. The pier has 2,448 feet of fishing space available along the rails.  The pier office and bait shop hours are 6am until 6pm only, but the pier itself is open 24 hours.  There is an honor box to pay fees if you want to go out on the pier when the office is closed.  Did we mention how cool the moon looks as it rises over the Gulf when you’re watching it from the pier.  If you’ve never witnessed this, you should definitely put it on your “to do” list!

5       Ride the Mobile Bay Ferry

Want to visit Dauphin Island while you’re nearby?  One of the most enjoyable ways to get there is to cross Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island inside your own vehicle on the Mobile Bay Ferry.  If you’ve never ridden a ferry, now’s the time!  You’ll probably pass large ocean going vessels, fishing boats and maybe even see someone on a kayak.  Did we mention dolphins?  Yep!  You’re probably going to see a few dolphins along the way.  The Mobile Bay Ferry runs all day, most days, weather permitting.  The trip takes about 40 minutes.  Once you’re on Dauphin Island, check out the Sea Lab Estuarium.

6       Peek inside aquariums at the Estuarium

Once you depart the ferry on Dauphin Island, you must visit The Estuarium.   It is located at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.   With 31 aquariums and hosting more than 100 species of sea life, The Estuarium, is sure to entertain and educate your whole family.  It showcases plants, animals and natural resources found all around the Mobile Bay Area.  The Estuarium is open most days and does have an entry fee.  Enjoy your time at the Sea Lab, but keep a watch on the ferry times!  You don’t want to miss your ride back!

7       Tour Fort Morgan

When you arrive back at the ferry landing, you’re at the gates of Fort Morgan.  Go ahead and take some time to tour this Alabama Landmark. The original fort at Fort Morgan was constructed over 200 years ago in 1812 and was called Fort Bowyer.  Now an Alabama State Historic Site, Fort Morgan is one attraction you won’t want to miss.  Family events are planned throughout the year, but even on days when there is no organized event, we suggest checking out all of the fort’s grounds including the paved walkway that leads out to the fort beaches.  No outing at Fort Morgan is complete without a trip through the museum.  In addition to all the great historical artifacts housed there, you’ll find a gift shop unlike any other in this area.  Take home a piece of history from the museum gift shop when you finish your day at Fort Morgan.

8       Visit The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

Did you have fun at the Estuarium?  How about seeing a larger and more diverse group of animals?  Did you know there is a zoo right here in Gulf Shores?  Famously deemed “The Little Zoo That CouldThe Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has been an island favorite since 1989 when it was called Zooland Animal Park.  Home to more than 500 animals, The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has well-kept pathways that wind throughout making wheelchair access easy.  Special “encounters” are available.  If you’re a fan of snakes and gators, check out the Reptile Garden encounter.  The Lemurs are sure to have you laughing and the Tamanduas are a treat for everyone!

The zoo sits on 17 acres located on Gulf Shores Parkway in the heart of our little beach town and welcomes visitors every day except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

9       Shop in the Shark Store

You’ve seen it right?  “The Shark Store”, better known as Souvenir City is located in the heart of Gulf Shores right across from the public beach.  You’ve wondered what could possibly be inside a store with a giant shark mouth as its entrance.  Souvenir City has been a Gulf Shores favorite since 1956, but it isn’t your average souvenir store.  After you literally pass right through a giant shark’s mouth to get inside this locally-owned store, you’ll find rows and rows of fun things to see, touch and buy.   You’ll find everything from shells, to tees, to Hermit Crab pets.  Whether you’re looking for a gift to take back to your bestie or just a little souvenir memorabilia for yourself, don’t miss a chance to spend some time in Souvenir City.

10     Visit the Public Beach in Gulf Shores

As we mentioned in the header of this blog, the City of Gulf Shores has literally rolled out a wonderful new addition to the public beach.  Just west of the Hangout, the wheelchair access mat is welcoming beach goers each day.  The mat eliminates the struggle of navigating wheels over and through sand, thus making accessing and enjoying The Gulf of Mexico so much easier!  Reviews by users have been great and we encourage you to give it a try.  Don’t forget your sunscreen and shades.  We’re pretty sure once you get so close to The Gulf, you’re probably going to want to stay a while and enjoy the sound of the lapping waves as you watch the gulls splash and dive for their dinner.

We, at Sunset Properties, hope you find some of these suggestions helpful when you’re planning your beach vacation.  While there are many more attractions with wheelchair and stroller accessibility in our area, these are just some of our favorites.

Do you already have a place to stay while you’re in Gulf Shores?  Sunset Properties has two vacation rental properties that are wheelchair accessible.  Before you finalize your vacation plans, we would love for you to see Grace and Endless Summer.

Grace, located in the Fort Morgan community has 6 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms. Grace will comfortably accommodate 20 people and has its own elevator.  With amazing views, Grace stands magnificently among her neighbors.

What to Wear to the Beach This Year

Here on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, our sugar-white beaches are the main attraction! The hustle and bustle of beach-goers virtually hums year-round, as long as the sun shines! And, when you plan your beach vacation or weekend getaway, you’ll want to consider what to wear to the beach along with other must-have beach items. It’s easy to forget beach essentials when you’re planning the big beach adventure, so let our expertise guide you to what to wear to the beach!

Are you excited yet? With your beach vacation coming up, you’re going to need the best ideas for things to do on Alabama’s Gulf Coast! That’s why, at Sunset Properties, we’re offering our free Vacation Guide. With our guide, you’ll have the best trip to the Gulf Coast ever!

What to Wear to the Beach?

There are a few essentials you absolutely shouldn’t forget to bring for your trip to the beach. Here, we’ll cover those and a few extras that can help make your beach vacation the best it can be!

Swimsuit

When it comes to your swimsuit, there are two guiding principles on which you must rely. One, make sure it’s comfortable and fits correctly. And, two, make sure you remember to pack it! A beach vacation can be very uncomfortable if you don’t feel right in your swimsuit, and is guaranteed to be uncomfortable if you forget it altogether! But, even if you do, there are plenty of places to get a new one once you’re here. No matter what, you want something that is fun to wear and that you don’t have to constantly adjust!

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are non-negotiable when it comes to maintaining the health of your eyes. The amount of reflection off the water and sand can do serious damage without sunglasses. We recommend you bring UV-rated sunglasses with you on your beach adventure. That way, your eyes are protected and you don’t have to leave the beach early due to headaches and strain from the sun.

Sunscreen and Hats

Equally as important as sunglasses are sunscreen and headwear. Even on cloudy days, the sun can give you a nasty burn that will sour your trip. So, come prepared with a high-SPF-rated sunscreen, hats, and sun-blocking clothing. Your face, neck, and shoulders are oftentimes the first to burn, so be sure to wear a hat with a thorough application of sunscreen/sunblock to your neck and shoulders. We recommend naturally-derived sunscreens/sunblocks for a more chemical-free way to save your skin.

Footwear

It may seem like a no-brainer to most, but there are still plenty of people who go to the beach ill-prepared, donning tennis shoes or worse. So, when headed to the beach, skip fashionable and go for functional. Flip-flops, water shoes, and sandals are all great choices to bring as little sand back as possible!

This summer, come to the sugar-white sands of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Whether you’re looking for a quieter beach or the energy of the beach crowd, we’ve got it all down here. What You Need to Know About the Sand Island Lighthouse

Sand Island Lighthouse

One of the more iconic attractions on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the Sand Island Lighthouse will illuminate the history of the area in a picture-worthy way you won’t forget. The historic lighthouse stands roughly three miles from the mouth of Mobile Bay and has since its first keeper in 1839. Through a series of events like erosion and war, the structure has been rebuilt a few times. The rich history the lighthouse represents tells a story you’re going to love to learn. Here’s what you should know about the Sand Island Lighthouse.

Are you looking for the most incredible experiences on Alabama’s Gulf Coast? The Sand Island Lighthouse is definitely one of them! For the rest, though, be sure to download our free Vacation Guide! Here at Sunset Properties, we’re the experts on the area. So, have an unforgettable vacation using our guide. You’re going to love it!

Sand Island Lighthouse History

If you’ve been to Ft. Morgan, then you’ve seen the Sand Island Lighthouse. It sits about three miles offshore to the west between Ft. Morgan and Dauphin Island. Currently, the lighthouse is owned and protected by the city of Dauphin Island. However, once upon a time this was a federally owned lighthouse with all of the bells and whistles. The Sand Island Lighthouse was originally commissioned in 1837 and was completed in 1839. Because of varying factors, from inadequacy to erosion to the Civil War, the lighthouse has seen a handful of manifestations over the years.

Not long after the first lighthouse was completed, the extreme erosion of Sand Island severely affected its longevity. The island lost between 50 and 100 feet of beach a year. The once-grand, two-story keeper’s quarters decreased over the years because of the extreme erosion. In addition to the island disappearing, itself, several keepers went missing in storms throughout the years. The current lighthouse was originally lit in 1873, but the final keepers went missing as they tried to head to the main land to pick up their replacement. It is believed that a storm caused their boat to capsize with no one aware of their calamity. After these keepers disappeared, the lighthouse was automated and a little over a decade later the light house was decommissioned. In 1971, the Fort Morgan Museum archived the second-order Fresnel lens as a part of the area’s history.

Modern Efforts to Maintain the Lighthouse

Recently, the City of Dauphin Island began a massive rescue operation to save the deteriorating island on which the lighthouse sits. The rip rap, a series of boulders that act as a breakwater, was moved and rearranged to make everything more stable. The Island was then wrapped with stainless steel cables to help keep things in place. Work was also done on the lighthouse, itself, replacing missing bricks and mortar. Also, 1.4 million cubic yards of sand dredge were added to the island. So, our beautiful light house is sitting on white sand again!

You can visit the lighthouse via marina cruises from the Dauphin Island Marina, on which you’ll see some of the many great things Dauphin Island has to offer, too!

Must-Have Beach Items for Your Beach Vacation

Planning a beach vacation? There are a few basics you’ll need, and we can help you remember them on your list! These must-have beach items will help you have the best time at the beach possible. Nobody wants a sunburn! And, how do you keep the kids entertained? Follow our suggestions, and you’ll be good to go on your next beach adventure.

Make sure your next incredible beach experience doesn’t go awry! Here at Sunset Properties, we’ve got you covered. These great suggestions are just the start, too. Check out our recommended things to do, and your vacation will reach another level!

1.  Sunscreen
The sun can be deceptive in that it can burn you, even on a cloudy day. Therefore, applying sunscreen thoroughly and often will protect your vacation and your skin for years to come. There are plenty of sunscreens available. From natural to some that aren’t great for your skin. And, there is also the option of wearing sun-blocking clothing.  Wearing protective swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are all great ways to insure the health of your skin at the beach.

2.  Sunglasses
Ever spent a day at the beach without sunglasses? Your eyes hurt and colors aren’t quite as vivid afterward. You get a headache and can even feel woozy. Bring UV-rated sunglasses with you to the beach to avoid these consequences and enjoy all of your day!

3.  Swimsuit
When considering a swimsuit, you want something you feel comfortable in, but also that blocks the sun. The most important thing is to not forget it! Put it on your list! And, if you do forget to pack it, there are plenty of great shops in the area to find a new one.

4.  Cooler/Drinks/Snacks
During the summer especially, the beach will be hot and windy. Combine those factors with the salty air, and you have a recipe for dehydration. So, it’s important to bring hydrating drinks with you. Bottled water is the best option for the beach. A couple of important regulations to observe: most beaches disallow glass containers on the beach. During some months, alcohol is not allowed, either. When it comes to snacks, be sure to pick up your trash and toss it in the available beach trash recepticles!

5.  Towel and Bag
How many times have you gone to the beach with what you think to be must-have beach items in tow, just to find that you’ve brought too much stuff to carry! In this instance, a beach cart or tote bag are the perfect solutions. Another important thing to consider is the need for something to sit on. Under an umbrella, the sand may take a while to cool down. Nonetheless, a beach chair or towel to sit on will make your beach experience that much better.

6.  TOYS –  If you have little ones, beach toys are always a good plan. Even just a simple bucket and shovel to make a sand castle will go a long way towards keeping kids entertained and happy on a warm sunny day. You might also want to consider a small, inflatable pool for tiny guys. This will give them a chance to splash in the water, but not the worry of actually being in the waves.

Stage Your Beach Day at a Nearby Rental

The advantage of having a vacation rental near the beach is that, in the event you forget something, you can just run back to get it. Also, after a long day walking on the sand and playing in the sun, you won’t have to travel far to find relaxation and some air conditioning. So, check out the available beach houses and condos from Sunset Properties! Our rentals are the perfect solution because they are ideally located just near the beach. You’ll love the vibes our condos give out, and you’ll love being in the middle of everything. So, why wait? Contact us today to reserve your stay!

Rainy Summer Vacation

It is that time of year  We are getting tons of calls from people planning their summer vacation.  It is also the time of year for us to get tons of rain. Unfortunately, travel insurance does not cover if you have a rainy summer vacation , but just because its rainy does not limit your fun things to do in the area.  We wanted to give you a few hits and helpful tips over the next few weeks so you will be completely prepared for your trip no matter what happens. This week I just wanted to talk to you about an alternate plan.

You never know from one day to the next what will happen on your vacation so the biggest tip is to be FLEXIBLE…  Flexibility will save hurt feelings, and bad attitudes from taking over the trip.  A little extra planning will allow for seamless transitions if it rains or if your group has just had enough sun for that week. Lucky you are on the Gulf coast it is the place to be when its rainy outside!

If you are just a group of adults looking for some great activities when it rains on your vacation.  Everything from shopping at the outlet mall or beach souvenir stores to Local cultural experiences at one of the many theaters or museums in the area.  Of course there is always a choice of movies and we have two movie theaters in the area  The Cobb Pinnacle Theaters, and Carmike Cinemas at the Wharf.

When it rains on your summer vacation and you are planning for the ever-board teens that are here with you try Blond Johns for all of their surfing dreams.  Or if surfing and skating are not on their radar and movies or shopping is not their thing visit Adventure Island they have indoor laser tag and an arcade.  Or you could try Arena Next Play at the Wharf, or the indoor arcades at Waterville, or The Track.

Children have the most selections by far on rainy summer vacation days.  So when planning if you have little ones all you need to know is what they are interested in.  Of course just like above there are movie options shopping and arcades.  But specifically for kids or anyone interested in science or animals check out the Esturairum at The Dauphin Island Sea Lab. The Esturarium is just a quick ferry ride away over to Dauphin Island.  If you are up for a little bit of a car ride take a day trip to Mobile or Pensacola.  In Mobile those science lovers in the family would enjoy The

Our all time favorite spot to direct families to is the Naval Air Station in Pensacola Museum.  It is free to the public although they always accept donations.  The museum has more planes that you can see in a day in every corner and even hanging from the ceiling.  History surrounds you at every turn and even in the cafe.  They have flight simulators, cockpit trainers, and a virtual flight deck.  Not to mention the Blue Angel’s practice here.  The 325-seat giant screen theater features the latest in state-of-the-art motion picture projection. The theater has upgraded from 70mm film projection to stunning premium laser-illuminated 2D projection system boasting full 4K resolution—nearly 9 million pixels on-screen—the first of its kind installed in an institutional theater.

So no worries!  There is plenty to do on rainy summer vacation it just takes a little planning ahead.  You will be sure to have the best vacation no matter what the weather happens to do while you are on vacation.
