Explore a Piece of Fort Morgan History
Construction of the historic fort began way back in 1819. It was designed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with manual labor coming mostly from African-American slaves. The name “Morgan” comes from a celebrated Revolutionary War hero, General Daniel Morgan. It was completed in 1834. Only 27 years later, Fort Morgan came under Confederate control at the start of the Civil War. Toward the end of the war in 1864, Union forces gained victory over a powerful Confederate force that included the U.S.S Tennessee, one of the strongest ironclad warships of the time. The fort was occupied once again from 1900 to 1923 and once again in 1942 in response to World War II. At the end of the war, the fort was abandoned. Today, it sits as a living history museum and the most important piece of Fort Morgan history.
What You’ll Find at the Museum
Over 200 years of historical artifacts are archived at the Fort Morgan Historic Site. In the museum, you’ll have the chance to see artillery, uniforms, local historical artifacts, and even two lighthouse lenses. Discover the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island AL
When you head out to Dauphin Island, you’ll find that things are a little different from the coast. This incredible island consists of 137 acres of maritime forest, dunes, marshes, plus a lake, swamp, and a beach. In addition to all this, there is also a three-mile trail system throughout the sanctuary. There are plenty of great ways to see the birds, explore, and relax. A big part of what makes the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island AL such an important biological wonder is the fact that it is the first landfall for many neo-tropical migrant birds. They fly from the Gulf over Central and South America every spring. It is here that they first land from their long and arduous trip, and it is here that they find food and rest both in the springtime and in the fall. As a result, the National Audubon Society deems the sanctuary as “Globally Important” for the migrations of multiple species.

Upper Woodland Trail | 1.7 miles

Arrive at the Gulf Adventure Center 15 minutes prior to your reservation for check-in where your guides will fit you with the necessary equipment for your zip line tour. After that, you’ll board a trolley for a practice session on a near-ground-level miniature zip line course. Once the group has passed the practice session, the real fun begins. From there, you’ll walk to the first tower and embark on your two-hour zip line ride. The eight-mile adventure will have your adrenaline pumping, and you’ll have mastered it by the time you’re done for wonderful memories that will last a lifetime!
Is it safe to zip line?
At Hummingbird Zip Lines, the course meets the highest industry standards for zip line equipment. Each tour has a guide to accompany you, ensuring your safety and fun at every turn, including rescue training like First Aid, CPR, and AED usage. Guides inspect equipment daily to ensure proper working order. So, as a safety net, per se, each participant must finish ground school training before taking the zip lines, which is no extra cost.
