Construction of the historic fort began way back in 1819. It was designed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with manual labor coming mostly from African-American slaves. The name “Morgan” comes from a celebrated Revolutionary War hero, General Daniel Morgan. It was completed in 1834. Only 27 years later, Fort Morgan came under Confederate control at the start of the Civil War. Toward the end of the war in 1864, Union forces gained victory over a powerful Confederate force that included the U.S.S Tennessee, one of the strongest ironclad warships of the time. The fort was occupied once again from 1900 to 1923 and once again in 1942 in response to World War II. At the end of the war, the fort was abandoned.
